I had the pleasure of reading Brooks Benjamin’s big-hearted MG novel, MY SEVENTH-GRADE LIFE IN TIGHTS (Delacorte Press, 2016). The action of the story focuses on Dillon Parker, a passionate but untrained freestyle-dance ninja. His mission? To win a summer scholarship at Dance-Splosion, the premiere dance studio in east Tennessee. But there’s a catch. His dance-crew pals, the Dizzee Freekz, think studios are for sellouts, and his dad, who wants Dillon to play football, can’t understand why his son would rather tendu than tackle. And there lies Dillon’s conundrum: Does he go for the Dance-Splosion scholarship at the risk of alienating his friends and family — or does he throw caution to the wind and dance, dance, DANCE? A fun, highly recommended middle-grade read!
